知否 (Don’t You Know ?) is a musical show with three musicians on stage, Chen Yihan, Min Xiao-Fen and Howie Kenty. The show is aimed at bringing to light the Chinese poet Li Qingzhao (1084 – ca. 1155), who is one of the most important female writers in Chinese history. According to her personal and eventful life history, she is seen as a feminist figure. The purpose of the musical is to reenact traditional Chinese recitations written by Li Qingzhao, mixed with electronic sounds made live and accompanied by the piano as well. Yihan Chen, the holder of the program, sees it within the creative tradition of traditional Chinese Opera in which boundaries between language and music composition are blurred and where improvisation is a fundamental element of the show. Therefore, François-Thibaut Pencenat aims by the stage lighting to underscore the improvised moments or to emphasize the dramatic sound elements. Moreover, the movements of the performers and the light effects allude to visuals traditionally used in Chinese art.

知否 (Don’t You Know ?) est un spectacle musical interprété par trois musiciens, Yihan Chen, Xiao Fen Min et Howie Kenty. Le spectacle est dédié à la poétesse Li Qingzhao (1084 – environ 1155), considérée comme une des poètes les plus importants de Chine. Par sa vie riche en événements, elle est perçue aujourd’hui, comme une figure féministe. L’enjeu du projet musical est de réinterpréter les poèmes chinois traditionnels écrits par Li Qingzhao. Ils sont accompagnés de sons électroniques réalisés en direct sur scène, d’un piano et de trois instruments traditionnels chinois. Yihan Chen, le directeur du programme, voit en l’opéra chinois ancestral un espace qui a pour tradition l’expérimentation, où les frontières entre la langue et la composition musicale sont floues et où l’improvisation devient un élément fondamental du spectacle. François-Thibaut Pencenat souhaite par sa proposition scénique amplifier les éléments sonores dramatiques tout en soulignant les moments improvisés. Les mouvements interprétés par les musiciens et les effets de lumière font, par ailleurs, allusion à des images traditionnelles chinoises.
